E-Mobility App - Cloud Backend

Projektausgangslage


Our client, a manufacturer of electric water sports equipment, required a robust cloud infrastructure to manage the data of thousands of vehicles worldwide. The company had already developed a successful hardware platform but faced the challenge of implementing a scalable backend solution that could handle both the growing user base and the increasing data demands.

The requirements were complex: the system had to process real-time telemetry data from vehicles, manage user sessions, provide firmware updates, and simultaneously adhere to the highest security standards. Additionally, the platform should be prepared for future expansions such as AI-based analytics and IoT integration.


Architektur und technische Umsetzung


We developed a modern microservices architecture based on Node.js, specifically optimised for the requirements of the e-mobility sector. The core of the solution is a high-performance API gateway that coordinates all communication between mobile apps, vehicles, and external systems.

The data architecture was designed to efficiently process both structured vehicle data and unstructured telemetry streams. We implemented an intelligent caching system that provides frequently accessed data in real-time while minimising database load. For the storage of critical vehicle data, we relied on a redundant database architecture with automatic backups and disaster recovery mechanisms.

Particularly challenging was the development of the session management system, which automatically detects and categorises journeys. The system continuously analyses incoming telemetry data and uses machine learning algorithms to identify driving patterns and automatically segment sessions. This enables users to gain detailed insights into their driving habits without having to manually start or end sessions.



Sicherheit und Compliance


As the platform processes sensitive user data and vehicle information, we implemented a multi-layered security concept. All data transmissions are end-to-end encrypted, and we rely on modern authentication methods such as OAuth2 and JWT tokens. Compliance with GDPR regulations was particularly important, which is why we implemented comprehensive data protection features such as automatic data minimisation and user-controlled data deletion.

For API security, we developed an intelligent rate-limiting system that protects against abuse while allowing legitimate high-frequency access. The system automatically detects suspicious activity patterns and can impose temporary access restrictions when necessary, without compromising the user experience.



Skalierbarkeit und Performance


One of the biggest challenges was developing an architecture that could keep pace with the rapid growth of the client company. We implemented a container-based infrastructure with automatic scaling that dynamically adjusts to user load. The system can easily scale from hundreds to tens of thousands of concurrent users without the need for manual intervention.

For global availability, we rely on a multi-region architecture with intelligent load balancing. Users are automatically redirected to the nearest server, minimising latency and ensuring an optimal user experience. The system achieves an availability of 99.9% and can maintain operation even in the event of failures of individual components.



Integration und Erweiterbarkeit


The platform was designed from the outset for integration with third-party systems. We developed comprehensive REST APIs and webhook systems that enable seamless integration of the platform into existing corporate systems. The integration with CRM systems and business intelligence tools proved particularly valuable, allowing our client to create detailed analyses of user behaviour and product performance.

For future expansions, we implemented a plugin system that allows new features to be added without interrupting ongoing operations. This proved to be particularly valuable when our client later wanted to add AI-based predictive maintenance features.



Monitoring und Analytics


A critical aspect of the project was the development of a comprehensive monitoring system that oversees both technical performance and business metrics. We implemented real-time dashboards that enable the client to continuously monitor system health and proactively respond to issues.

The analytics system processes millions of data points daily and automatically generates reports on user behaviour, system performance, and business trends. These insights have helped our client make data-driven decisions regarding product development and business strategy.



Projektergebnis und Geschäftsimpact


The implemented cloud platform has exceeded our client's expectations. The system now processes over a million API requests daily and supports more than 50,000 active users worldwide. The automated analytics features have led to a 40% reduction in support requests, as users now receive proactive notifications about maintenance needs and optimisation opportunities.

Particularly impressive was the impact on product development: The detailed usage data enabled our client to identify weaknesses in the hardware and optimise the next generation of products accordingly. This resulted in a 25% improvement in battery life and a 30% reduction in warranty claims.

The platform has proven to be so successful that our client is now offering it to other manufacturers as a white-label solution, which has led to an additional line of business and significant revenue increases.
